The Spanish lessons associated with this fundraiser help kids become global citizens. They teach tolerance, explore issues of social justice, and connect with many of the United Nations SDGs. This fundraiser can also fulfill requirements of the AATSP's Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica.
But did you know your class can actually take action to help people in need? Your class can hold a fundraiser to provide cookstoves for families in Latin America! All of the information you’ll need is included below. Lesson 4 from our Spanish Unit also includes stories from many people who have used creative ways to raise money and support for StoveTeam.

Open fire cooking can produce smoke equal to 400 cigarettes per hour. Exposure causes respiratory infections, eye damage, heart and lung disease, and cancer. Women and children are affected the most.
Carbon dioxide and black carbon released by open fires is a leading cause of climate change, and collecting wood for cooking fires is a leading cause of deforestation. 4 billion people still cook this way.
4 million burns are reported each year, and many more go unreported. Children are especially vulnerable as most open fires are on or near the ground.
Families can spend 20 hours a week or more gathering wood just to cook, time that could be spent on education or work that generates income.
